This isn’t a dare. Some garments are shedding tiny bits of plastic that escape into our waters, the oceans and potentially enter our food chain. With many retailers claiming that their clothes are good for the environment, it's important to understand what clothing is actually environmentally friendly or not.

If the world was to end tomorrow, you can guarantee there would be someone there selling T-shirts. Whilst we are not facing apocalyptic times right now, we are facing a crisis however with plastic over running our oceans and water ways. It is predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans. With plastic production estimated to raise by unto 40% in the next 10 years it’s a sobering thought.

With climate change amongst other devastating effects caused by humans becoming more apparent, many manufacturers and retailers are having to adjust to the market demand of eco-products. Being environmentally friendly is becoming expected of a business and rightly so.

But how eco-friendly are they and who is selling a con? Whilst it may sound great that plastic bottles are being recycled into polyester fabrics, it’s actually not that great at all.

“Microfibres have been found in air, rivers, soil, drinking water and table salt.”

The thing is, every time we wash these materials they shed millions of plastic microfibres. Fibres so small they can drain out of our washing machines and pass straight through treatment plants into the sea. It is said that microfibres have been found in air, rivers, soil, drinking water and table salt.

Once in our oceans, they can absorb nasty chemicals. It then gets disturbing as sea organisms such as plankton mistake these particles as food. Many smaller sea creatures depend on plankton and in turn eat these toxic fibres, which end up in our food chain. But it’s not just us, magnificent creatures such as whale sharks and the great blue whale depend on plankton too just to survive.

"If you don't like the idea of eating your own clothes, alternatives to using plastic need to be found and at Severn Brand we have."

All of our products are made from nothing more than 100% organic cotton.
