From a conversation started between two middle aged cousins. The dream was to find out if there was anyone in Bristol still into bodyboarding and if there was enough interest to start a club??

The answer to that question is now very clear, not only was there interest but a thriving community of likeminded individuals that love the boogie. Twelve months on and it’s time to celebrate the founding of the inland UK bodyboarding fraternity.

It’s a balmy Friday evening at the car park of The Wave, the unofficial home of the Bristol Bodyboarders Club. A large group of retro styled guys stand around telling tales of waves and sessions of past. Vintage boards being flexed and admired and fins being compared. You can’t help but absorb the buzz of excitement for the first year anniversary as everyone makes the long walk to the pond!

The club took up its place on the top deck of the club house looking over the sun drenched pond. The normal chatter of better settings and comparisons of different wave pools around the world. The old left versus right conversation winds down the time and before you know it, it’s time we all suit up!

Seventeen club members enter the water, way out numbering a couple of lonely stand ups who look very much out of place in this boogie heavy session. They’re also slightly confused at the number of people wearing neon pink zinc on their faces. As the barrels roll through, an echo of yells and laughter comes from the water. People pushing each other to try tricks and watch their mates get barrelled. Everyone scored some sick waves and the energy travelled through the water and air. As the session finishes everybody has big smiles, talking about deep pits and their aerial game. And Cathy’s of course!

We then headed for beers on the decking as the sun goes down and the first year anniversary comes to an end and time for the awards. There was awards for rider, clubman and most improved rider of the year, and of course the most popular of all, The Cathy Barry award for the session. For those unaware Cathy is a local girl with quite a reputation. You should look her up to figure what this award is all about! There was prizes from our generous family of sponsors – Severn Brand, The Pit Surf Shop and Thrash International. It was a perfect end to the meet.

The club started off from two cousins from Bristol, wondering if a club was worthy of starting. It’s now turned into a large group of bodyboarders from all parts of the globe and UK! Good friendships have been made and one thing they all have in common is the love for the boogie and surfing the best waves we can find! Bring on next year! Pond scum forever!!

As we move towards the end of our Winter Warrior UK Bodyboard Photo Competition holding period we thought we'd take the opportunity to look at the submissions so far.
Being environmentally friendly is expected of a business these days and rightly so.
